misprintedtype.com - Website/ Background

The illustration for the enter page is really interesting but not really my type of drawing style but I like it as it works with the rest of the theme that goes through the whole website.
The reason I went on this website was to look at the fonts but the
images used caught my eye more then the fonts them self.

I think it has a bit of a Victorian theme to it because of the patterns design used.

Jhonen Vasquez - Character Design

I really like this simple detailed design. There isn't much to the character but the small details on the face and the shadows on the clothes kind of give you a 3D feel.
I may use the idea of not using a lot of detail because the character would start to become harder to produce in the puppet/ figure and for the website.

spookyland.com - Roman Dirge - Character Design + Puppet/ Figure + Website/ Background

This website isn't really that interesting but the characters and the style that he has drawn.
There isn’t much to really see in the website cause its almost all there but then there’s the menu bar in which I think is a bit hard to read but then they say that your brain don’t really read the whole word.

It could be me but it think its a bit hard to read some of the text because of the colour. There’s also isn't any real theme in the website which is really disappointing as its an official website.

They produced a few things to go with the comic which I have to say I wouldn't really mind having, the merchandise aim are teenagers and older.

Heres a few examples of comic
strips that Roman Dirge work:

What am really really disappointed is that there’s more work and planning done on the authors biography then on the official website.
The design on the image above the menu bar really reminds me of Tim Burton's corpse bride.

Job, Joris En Mareike (name wrong) - Character Design

His pieces are 3D Plasterine models. Their not cute but their strange looking because a few of his pieces you cant tell what their suppose to be but their cute in their own way. The reason why I like these characters because its not what you see a lot, you may see it in creator comforts but they also make it look like what the creator got to look they don’t mess with the characters not like the characters by W.Lee the dog in it, the body has been changed to make it look sweeter and the figures on the person face has less details.

Tubbypaws - Character Design

Their work are done by using simple shapes and then adding details like eyes and clothes if the character is a person. I really like the animals that they have done because instead of doing what every one is doing for example drawing out a proper dog’s body shape they use a 3D shape and add figures to it so that you can make out it’s a dog and not some thing else.

Superdeux - Character Design + Puppet/ Figure

This is a graphic/ animation company set up by Sebastien Roux and Stephane Huleux.
Their work contain cute and violent that some reason I really like. The figures they have created are the stereotype Series. All different in there own way, depending which series you get. The best ones I have to say that I really like is the “From Outer Space” their third series, because they’re bright coloured characters and also the cute little spaceship.
The other stereotype series they have done are “be my slave” their first series they done. They’re cute but also a bit rude as you can see. Their characters don’t really change only that their custom change with each series they do.
Superdeux has created their, own Dunny and Qee Bear. The Dunny version are really good but I was disappointed when I saw the Qee Bear because it don’t really have their usual trademark to it.

Edward Scissorhands - Tim Burton - Website/ Background

I watched Edward Scissorhands because to help me come up with ideas for background design for the website. I want it too look similar to Tim Burton’s dark and strange set design. I really like the set design for the Inventor’s castle, where the roof is 3 times the height of the characters and also the spooky looking staircase that goes around the corner instead straight up.

Scenes when Dianne Wiest walks in to the castle to sell her make up produces to the owner of the castle (Edward). In this picture (<--) you can just tell the scale of the set was and the rough design of the interior.

Good Charlotte - Music Video (Predictable)

The reason why I am looking at this Music video by Good Charlotte is because the art style that I like is also in this video when the band is playing/ performing together in the house/ set.

"problem with downloading video code to blogger..." go to this website to watch the video instead ....

Timothy Horn - Distorted Piece - Website/ Background

Horn is a Sculpture/Installation. His pieces have a gothic/ distorted look that could help me design the background and even help me design my main character.

Piece called: Chippendale Flip #1

I like this piece because the way it’s distorted and that it has a gothic feeling to it. The discpritation under the piece say: wax to be cast in rubber, digitally distorted furniture pattern used to hand model form. Am guessing that Horn let the wax melt to the base of the candle holders leaving it lone and then covering it in rubber to protect the wax.

David Menges - Distorted Furniture - Website/ Background

David Menges

Menges is a furniture designer. I found this designer on Google under the subject name of distorted furniture. The reason I decided to research these pieces is because to help me on my background designs because these are the type of object and style I want to put in my designs.

A few of his pieces:

Piece called: Mirror

In these pieces am just looking at the different shapes that creates this piece. In most of his work there are a lot of craves and angles used to create the distorted feel.

Mirror

Piece called: Distorted Dining

This piece looks like some one melted the Furniture and waited for it to cool down. The design it self is very different to other piece of furniture that I have seen.

Distorted Dining

Piece called: Crooked Cabinet

When I first saw it I was like yes this is the type of style of furniture that I want to put in my FMP but I asked most of the people in my class to see if they knew what the proper name for the style was but they didn’t know or thinks that this style doesn't really have a name so I may have to ask someone.

Ruby Gloom - Website/ Background

I don’t really like this website but I do like their character Ruby Gloom. The layout isn’t very interesting to look at and very dull.
The drawings on the top of the menu bar are really the type of drawings am trying to do for my own website. The way they drawn the images I don’t really like because there’s a lot of shadow details whilst in Emily Strange its simple and only used 4 colours whilst this one there more the 4 that I can see at the moment.
The red that they have used for this website is really strong its the first thing you really see, even thou the red is only in small amounts it really catches your eye.
There isn't much to talk about this the other pages from the menu bar. The contact page and desktop extra stuff and really nicely lay out.

On this page for desktops I like the way that the wallpaper is framed with a wooden window like frame. In the whole website there isn't much colour used but then it does seem ok not to over load the website with colour.

The idea for the contact Ruby page is the best because of the way they decided to do it. The image of a ????

When you hover the mouse over the board the arrow becomes the ????.

Cuddly Rigor Mortis (pictures) - Character Design + Puppet/ Figures

These plush toys are created by Kristin Trecek who is one of many artist from Pictoplasma that I really liked. Her pieces aren’t paper base but fabric. She makes Plushes/ stuff toys. The first image of her work I saw looked really cute and horrible looking but I liked it and when I looked at her other pieces I was hooked. The only reason I can give you why I like them so much is because they’re strange looking but also cute at the same time.

Emily The Strange - Website/ Background

There’s only really 3 colours (red, black, white) used mainly but grey is also used for high ling parts of the character and background images.

The same font is used through out the whole website and is also used on most of their mechanise.

The character it self isn’t very hard to draw but the way they drew it is very interesting because if you look to the image to the left they don’t use outlines

What I really like about this site is the background images mainly and some of their products they have made.

The only problem that I really have for this site is the search engine because you don’t really get all the items that you ask for like if you put sock you get a few and then when you look for something else you see a different pair that did not appear in the search engine result.

My Pet Skeleton - Website/ Background

I came around this website from Clutter monthly email.
The company that build Johnny Hollow band website is My Pet Skeleton.
This website has a gothic and macabre feel to it. The first page before you enter the home page has a typewriting theme which is through the website.
What I like about the first page is that there's a message/ poem that that appear whilst you wait to be able to enter the home page.
Also the ladybird is almost like a character / host to the website that appears when the file or programme has finished.

What I like about the website the most is that when you hover over the butterflies they flap a bit and there also audio that you can here when they flap. All the butterflies are buttons that link you to one of their song lyrics.

On the lyrics page there’s of course the lyrics to the song and also an audio clip of the music, but the thing that I like on this page would be the riddle that comes with the page. You have to read the riddle and then try to answer it, where it says "WHAT AM I?" you place your answer there if you get it wrong there’s an audio of a voices of either a male or a female the audio changes each time you get it wrong. They say "NO" some times they say it softly and sometime the "NO" can be really deep and lard that it scares you, but when you get it right.

A little ladybird walks on to the lyrics and when you click on it ...

A little menu list comes up with extras that goes with the song like wallpaper and the MP3 version of the song.

When you go back to the main menu there’s a picture frame button that takes you to the history of the band and other extra feathers...

Zombie Hotel - Character Design

I've look in to this children cartoon to help me with the character design. The main 2 characters Fungus and Maggot, have a nicely structured figure, what i really like about the design are how the animators design the face. The mouth is extremely larger then the rest of the face.

Pictoplasma - Character Design

Founded at the beginning of 2000 by Peter Thaler. Pictoplasma contains extensive collection and archive of contemporary character designs by artists, animators, graphic designers, and production companies from around the world.

There are not a lot of designers that I know of but I have seen a few piece by these individual artists and designers but here are a few designers work that I found in ‘Pictoplasma’ book published in 2001 and on the Pictoplasma website.

Mark Mason - Character Design

Mark Mason has helped and produced a few TV animations like The Raggy Doll's, William's Wish Wellingtons, Angelmouse and even the film All Dogs Go To Heaven.
He has also worked along with regular assistants animators like, Jonathan Booth, Sam Power and many more.

The reason that I decided to research this animator is because he produced Forgotten Toys, which I watched because of one of his characters in the film, called Annie the rag doll.
I was looking at mostly the clothes and the detail in the face.

The image “http://www.markmasonanimation.co.uk/forgotten_toys/forgotten_toys400.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

The shape of the clothes is similar to what I want my character to wear but more of a skater/ Goth feel, so the colour and the pattern will be completely different to the character in Forgotten Toys.

Todd McFarlane - Spawn.com - Puppet/ Figure

Little be about Todd McFarlane:

He started working at Marvel/Epic Comics in 1984 pencilling characters like Spiderman, Incredible Hulk and many others. He also worked on characters like Batman titles Detective, 2 issues of Batman: Year 2 from DC Comics.

After a few months after his first daughter was born, him and a few other artist from Marvel left that company and create their very own independent company called Image Comics. The artist that left Marvel are Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Jim Valentino, Erik Larson, Marc Silvestri and Whilce Portacio. Even thou they published together they worked on their own individually characters. At Image Comics he published a comic he had done 10 YEARS before called 'Spawn'. The first issue was shipped in 1992 and sold 1.7 million copies around the world in 16 different languages.

Later one he wanted his character 'Spawn' to be a toy/ figure. After asking toy companies if they would make them to his expectations of good quality and detailed figures. When he couldn’t find some one who would so he created McFarlane Toys. From where he moved on from producing 'Spawn' to characters or artist or people from recreating characters from music artist (KISS, Rob Zombie, AC/DC and many others), films (Sherk, Austin Powers, Jaws and many others), games, comics and people from the sport world (Football, Baseball, Basketball and Hockey).

His figures:

Puss 'n' Boots if you go on the web site the figure it self is really detailed from the colours to the marks made in the figure where the fur would be the texture are great. Very last detail is there the shadows on the boots the platform the figure is standing on are so detailed you can’t believe. I would have to guess that the figure was hand painted to be able to get so much detail.

Gate Keeper and Bigfoot this figure to me looks real like is a picture from the film it self, the detail in the two figure is amazing the texture in them and the colours too.

Class notes ... (06-03-06)

In the morning we had to make a small presentation of what we where going to do for our Final Major Project so that we could also get extra designers and styles to research to add to our research file.

After lunch we got around the table and discussed what we where going to do and then after our presentation very one added what other things we should research.

For me the extra research that I have to do is:
Howies.co.uk
Interpol - music video
Todd McFarlane
Consortium
Roman diva (???)

Being John Malkovich - Puppet/ Figure

Being John Malkovich was directed by Spike Jonze. Jonze also produces music videos for artists like Bjork, Beastie Boys and many others. (To see other music videos and films go to http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005069/).

The reason why I have looked in to this film is because Neil who gave me the film name said it would link in to my work not saying how, at first the film wasn’t some thing that I would watch because of the genre.

The image “http://www.dvdorchard.com.au/images/coverart/100166.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

I got really in to the film because of the puppets how the moved and how lifelike they were. The music used matched well with what the puppets where doing.
After watching it the first time I re watched the film but this time looking at the structure of the puppet and where the strings where placed.

For my Final Major Project, I am going to set up a small company with a Skater/Goth theme. The target audiences that I am going to aim it to are teenagers with and ‘alternative’ fashion sense. This will be similar to website companies like Ruby Gloom, Emily Strange and many others. I am going to produce written survey and interviews to find out what teenagers do in their spare time and then I can incorporate this in to my website. This would be my primary research.

To be able to reach a whole range of clients and audiences, I am going to also design a website, I be making a limited edition moving puppet and a prototype of the website. This may expand depending on my research.

I’ll also need to produce a business pack with company colour scheme, font, logo and illustration. With these detailed I’ll keep the themes through out my project.

I will also look in to setting up a company, the advantages and disadvantages of owning a business, but the most important thing is the practicalities of setting up their business up and types of ways of promoting them.

At this point in time the research is going to be done early to save time, so all I have to do is add to what I have done already and be able to start doing the practical pieces.

The rough lists of research techniques that I’ll need to look up are:
o Designers and artists (Salvador Dali, Pictoplasma, Cosmic Debris, RokStuff.com and Neville Brody.)
o Websites (Emily Strange, Art Computer Magazine, Hi-res, logo & identity books, power of the poster and Frost design)
o Different fonts styles (Graphic magazines, dafonts.com, Émigré)
o Character designs (Cartoon Animations, How to draw Aladdin and Manga)
o Computer magazines for information on new or different techniques. (Art computer, art project, Digit and creative reviews)

The research that I’ve done so far are looking at ‘Being John Malkovich’, ‘Forgotten Toys’ and noting different character designs.

Techniques that I would need to look up are how visually interesting a website is, what I need to make a puppet. The answers for these questions are, I am going to ask the technicians in the 3D workshop department and ask my peers if they would know how or know a different way.

To review my Final Major Project I am going to ask my peers and students from different courses, to what they think of the pieces I’ve done already and then write them down in a sketchbook or in a Blog. Also look in to the tutorial advise I get and refer to assessment grid.

FMP - Brief

We've been given the FMP Guidelines Brief today. Neil gave us a few tips to what to do in the unit and how roughly we should do it. This brief doesnt't start until March some time.

Guidance - Writing a brief

In the booklet there is a list to help us to write a brief. The brief has to be 500 words altogether.

Unit 6 - Art and Design Exploration

Research could be like Annabelle research folder we did for her but no essay at the end of it. Divide different art areas (e.g. Animation, Graphics, Illustration, Typography and est.). Ideas of what I could put in the research articles, cuttings, posters I’ve seen, cartoons, artists and their work. Also write notes on them and highlight parts that are important.

Unit 7 - Art and Design Application

For this unit it is personal research meaning ... put in research of different techniques I've found or can use also write a small paragraph ... How I can use it? Why I am/not using the technique? and so on. Also use visual language skills.

Unit 8 - Art and Design Realisation

For this unit we have to produce the final piece and also how we present the pieces is also looked at. The layout of the work on the display board will be important. If there new skills I need to learn ask or look them up.
